PHILADELPHIA – Senior
Vasa Pusica scored 21 points to surpass the 1,000-point plateau for his two-year Northeastern career as the Huskies finished the regular season in style with a 90-66 win at Drexel on Saturday at Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Pusica crossed the 1,000-point barrier with two free throws in the second half and finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the Huskies earned their 20th win of the season (20-10, 14-4 CAA).
Redshirt junior
Jordan Roland led all scorers with 26 points – his ninth game with at least 20 points this season– and senior
Anthony Green added 14 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting.
The Huskies led by just four at the half, 37-33, but used a 19-0 run early in the second stanza to turn a 41-37 lead into a 60-37 cushion with 12 minutes to play. Drexel would get no closer than 17 the rest of the way as Northeastern made 18-of-23 free throws in the second half to seal the game.
The Huskies out-rebounded the Dragons (13-18, 7-11 CAA) by a 36-29 margin and featured three players with nine boards in the game: Pusica, Green and junior
Bolden Brace, who also added eight points.
All eight NU players scored at least four points, and the Huskies took care of the basketball all game long with just four turnovers on the day.
With the victory, Northeastern head coach
Bill Coen moved into sole possession of third place all-time in career CAA wins with 149. Under Coen's guidance, Northeastern won 20 games for the second straight season (for the first time since 1985-87) and the fifth time since Coen took over the reigns of the program in 2007.
The Huskies, who finished 14-4 in CAA play for the second straight season, will head into next weekend's CAA tournament as the No. 2 overall seed.
