Recap
SALT LAKE CITY – Making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history, the No. 13-seeded Northeastern men's basketball team (23-11) ran into a hot shooting team in No. 4-seeded Kansas (26-9), falling in the first round of the national tournament on Thursday at Vivint Smart Home Arena, 87-53.
The Huskies struggled from the floor throughout the night, finishing with a season-low 28 FG% (16-of-57) while being forced to contain Dedric and K.J. Lawson and Devon Dotson, who combined for 56 of the Jayhawks' points. Kansas finished the night shooting 56% (34-of-61).
Jordan Roland led the Huskies with 12 points, breaking the program record for single-season threes with 99 in the process, while
Bolden Brace added seven points, nine rebounds and four assists.
The Huskies came flying out of the gates in the first half with Roland nailing back-to-back threes to quickly lock up the program record for single-season three pointers (99), giving Northeastern the early 6-5 lead early.
Kansas, though, used runs of 11-2 and 11-0 during the middle 10 minutes of the half to jump out to a double-digit lead at 31-19 with four minutes to go in the first, with nine of those points coming from Lawson.
Bolden Brace did it all at both ends of the court in the opening half with five boards, including an offensive rebound that led to a Pusica three, and a block on the defensive end on Ochai Agbaji late in the half as Kansas went into the locker up, 37-25.
A quick 5-0 run out of the break with a bucket from Roland and three points from
Anthony Green would bring the Huskies within seven early in the second half, but that's as close as Northeastern would get as Kansas' red hot shooting continued while the Huskies couldn't buy a bucket at the other end.
