PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Redshirt-sophomore right-hander
Tom Githens's six strikeouts and 2-0 lead on Wednesday ultimately gave way to Villanova's four-run, two-out rally during the sixth inning as the Northeastern baseball team lost its midweek game against the Wildcats, 5-2, at the 2019 Snowbird Baseball Classic.
Â
Githens posted five scoreless innings to begin his first start since 2017, retiring 13 consecutive batters after Dylan McNary's first-inning, leadoff single. After Timothy Lilly's base hit had opened the sixth inning, the NU right-hander collected two successive outs before a walk to Nick Lorusso ended his career-long outing, although the Wildcats would proceed to rally for four runs before the inning's close.
Â
Cam Walsh and
Jeff Costello began the game with consecutive singles for Northeastern (5-6), which took the 1-0 lead as a result of a wild pitch during
Corey DiLoreto's at-bat.
Spenser Smith upped the Huskies' lead to 2-0 during the fourth inning, when he doubled home
Kyle Peterson.
Â
Ryan Toohers recorded the key hit for Villanova (2-10) during its sixth-inning rally, capping the scoring with his two-RBI single to left center against
Brian Rodriguez. The Wildcats tacked on an insurance run during the seventh inning courtesy of Tyler Bruno's sacrifice fly.
