WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite Ian Fair's two-run home run that trimmed its deficit to 4-3 during the third inning, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to slow UNCW's steady supply of runs during the early going as the Huskies lost Friday's series opener at Brooks Field, 7-4.

Northeastern (16-17, 6-4 CAA) jumped out to the 1-0 lead during the first inning, capitalizing on two errors by the Seahawks that led to Corey DiLoreto's sacrifice fly to center field.

UNCW (19-16, 4-3 CAA) answered the Huskies' lead by bringing nine batters to the plate, totaling three runs and four hits. With Greg Jones at third base following a stolen base and an errant throw down to catch him, Kep Brown tied the game with his RBI single to right field, preluding Brooks Baldwin's RBI groundout and Chris Thorburn's RBI base hit.

Jackson Meadows queued another scoring chance for the Seahawks during the second inning, connecting on a leadoff triple and later scoring on Brown's RBI groundout to the left side.

Cam Walsh helped the Huskies dig out of their deficit during the third inning, when he registered the first of four hits that NU managed against UNCW starter Luke Gesell. Scott Holzwasser followed with a well-struck fly out into the left field wind before Fair rocketed Gesell's 0-1 delivery over the left field fence to trim the score to 4-3.

Despite the offensive momentum, back-to-back third-inning singles by Thorburn and Noah Liles ended Tyler Brown's start early, leading to two more runs that pushed the Seahawks' lead to 6-3.

Northeastern earned a run back during the seventh inning when Holzwasser's infield single was errantly thrown away at second base, allowing Ryan Solomon to score. NU presented the potential go-ahead run at the plate during the ninth inning, but was unable to score with one out and the bases loaded.
