PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
Two of the top crews in the nation battled difficult conditions and a strong headwind on the Seekonk River last weekend as No. 5 Brown held on to top the No. 6 Northeastern men's rowing team for the Dreissigacker Cup.

The first varsity went stroke for stroke throughout the 2000-meter course as Brown held a slight advantage through the opening 500-meters before maintaining it through the body of the race. The Huskies continued to press through the final 1000-meters, but the Bears ultimately escaped with a time of 6:11.80 to nip the Huskies by less than two seconds (6:13.20).

The win gave Brown the Dreissigacker Cup for the second straight year, a race that has been rowed uninterrupted since 1965. Brown holds a 32-23 advantage in the all-time series.

Northeastern's second varsity faced a stiff test in its race as conditions continued to be an issue, with Brown earning an open water advantage to take the race at 6:33.90 to knock off the Huskies at 6:40.20.

The third varsity was another close contest as the crews went head to head with tight margins throughout, but once again it was the Bears able to cross the finish just ahead of Northeastern at 6:48.60 to the Huskies' 6:50.0, while Northeastern's varsity four took control of its race early to pick up an open water lead on both Brown crews to win by seven seconds at 7:50.80.

The Huskies will be back home on the Charles River on May 4 and May 5 when Northeastern battles Harvard for the Smith Cup and Wisconsin for the Congram Cup.
