HARRISONBURG, Va. – Overcoming three deficits against fifth-seeded UNCW during Wednesday's opening round of the 2019 CAA tournament, the fourth-seeded Northeastern baseball team manufactured a late run against the Seahawks to force extra innings, where the Huskies were upended in 11 innings, 8-6, at James Madison's Veterans Memorial Park.

Jake Farrell went three-for-five to lead Northeastern (26-28, 12-12 CAA), which will play its first elimination game on Thursday, May 23, at 11 a.m. The senior first baseman went three-for-five and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle, scoring two runs and totaling three RBIs.

UNCW (29-28, 12-12 CAA) did lefty ace Sean Mellen in for three first-inning hits while rushing out to the 2-0 lead. Greg Jones opened the game with a leadoff double before Cole Weiss and Kep Brown soon followed with an RBI single and double, respectively.

Once Mellen had closed his first inning with consecutive strikeouts, the Huskies responded immediately. Cam Walsh mimicked Jones with a leadoff double, two batters before Farrell bombed the game-tying, two-run home run to right field.

After Brown had homered during the third inning to put the Seahawks in front, 3-2, Northeastern earned the run back during the next inning. Spenser Smith and Jake Rosen both drew walks against Luke Gesell, the first of which loaded the bases while the second knotted the score at 3-3.

UNCW ended Mellen's start at four and two-thirds innings once Doug Angeli's two-RBI single and Noah Bridges's sacrifice fly had put the Seahawks in front, 6-3. Yet again, Northeastern held the immediate answer as Farrell followed Ian Fair's fifth-inning single with an RBI triple down the right field line, scoring one pitch later as Scott Holzwasser sent an RBI groundout to the right side.

Trailing, 6-5, the Huskies scratched across the tying run during the eighth inning without a hit. Reaching as a hit batsman, Corey DiLoreto was bunted into scoring position by Jeff Costello and took third base via Smith's ground ball, completing his trip around the bags at the expense of Zachary Bridges's wild pitch.

Brandon Dufault pitched magnificently in relief of Mellen, logging five scoreless innings before UNCW rallied for the two go-ahead runs during the 11th inning. With Andrew Misiaszek on the mound, Weiss connected on an RBI double while Angeli added another RBI single to set the final score at 8-6.
