Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 12 Huskies command Connecticut, 5-2

HARTFORD, Conn. – Led by a pair of goals from junior Zach Solow, the No. 12 Northeastern men's hockey team (12-5-2, 7-4-1 Hockey East) opened up the second half in a dominant fashion, downing conference opponent Connecticut (7-8-4, 4-5-2 Hockey East), 5-2, on the road Friday night. With his two points, the Naples, Fla. native extended his current point streak to a career-high eight-straight games.

The Huskies offense came out firing in the conference clash, posting five unanswered goals through the first 38 minutes of play. Matt Filipe opened up Northeastern's offensive onslaught with an early tally, shooting one through the five-hole just 30 seconds into the contest. Midway through the first, Solow kept the Huskies' momentum going with an unassisted shot, picking up his first of the night on a takeaway. Sophomore Tyler Madden capped Northeastern's first period scoring with a shot on the doorstep, handling UConn's defenseman to go bar down and give the Huskies the 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

After back-to-back UConn penalties put Northeastern on the 5-on-3, Solow capitalized on the man-up opportunity to knock in his second of the night, redirecting the pass from Madden to move the Huskies to 4-0, before Matt DeMelis picked up his fourth goal of the season to close off Northeastern's 5-0 run.

Northeastern's nationally-ranked penalty kill unit continued its dominance, shutting down all six UConn extra-man opportunities to register their fifth-consecutive game without allowing a power-play goal. Leading the charge, goaltender Craig Pantano made 24 saves for the Huskies, finishing with a .923 save percentage on the night to pick up his twelfth win of the season.
