Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late basket tips Maine past Northeastern, 63-62

BOSTON – With veteran guards Stella Clark and Kendall Currence fronting the scoring on Sunday, the Northeastern women's basketball team nearly turned the tables on Maine during the second half, despite settling for the 63-62 defeat after its entertaining final possession at Cabot Center.

Clark crafted 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Huskies while Currence recorded her second consecutive 19-point performance to start the season. The NU duo combined to yield eight of the team's nine 3-point field goals with Clark sinking five of her eight perimeter attempts.

Ayanna Dublin logged eight points, five rebounds and three steals to fuel the Huskies' interior game, helping NU sport the +7 advantage on the glass.

Northeastern (0-2) trailed by as many as 10 points during the first half yet trimmed the Black Bears' lead to 32-26 heading into the locker room. Bianca Millan scored 12 of her game high, 34 points, for the visitors during the opening half, where the Huskies committed 14 of their 20 turnovers.

Maine (3-0) pulled ahead, 40-32, midway through the third quarter before Northeastern began chipping away at its deficit. Clark's fifth 3-pointer of the game slid NU within a bucket, 54-52, with 6:35 remaining in regulation while Mossi Staples later connected from downtown to knot the game at 55-55 inside five minutes to go.

Currence drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer in front of the Huskies' bench with 2:15 left to play as Northeastern proceeded to carry its 62-61 lead well into the final minute. After Millan had regained the lead for Maine with 17 seconds remaining, NU gave itself three looks at the potential game-winning basket during the closing seconds, despite coming up unsuccessful.

GAME DEDICATION
Northeastern had dedicated Sunday's home game to the memory of Breonna Taylor and the #SayHerName movement as part of the team's season-long End Racism and Black Lives Matter conversation. The Huskies will dedicate every home game during their 2020-21 season to a victim of racism and police brutality.
