Northeastern cruises to 69-45 road win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Backed by senior Shannon Todd's team-high, 16-point outing on Sunday, the Northeastern women's basketball team cruised past Elon, 69-45, at Schar Center, securing the season tiebreaker against the Phoenix while moving back into the CAA top five.

Todd hit three of her four 3-point attempts and shot five-for-six at the foul line, ending the day three points shy of eclipsing the program's 1,000-point scoring milestone. Sophomore forward Alexis Hill followed Todd's lead in the NU starting rotation, adding 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and a block.

Northeastern (11-13, 7-6 CAA) synced its 24-point victory with its 24-point advantage in bench scoring. Freshman forward Mide Oriyomi posted 14 points and three rebounds as a reserve while sophomore guard Kendall Currence added eight points and four rebounds during 27 minutes of action.

The Huskies outscored Elon (12-12, 7-6 CAA) during every quarter, shooting 53 percent from the field and 46 percent from downtown. On the flip side of the ball, NU set a season-best mark in field goal percentage defense (27.4), holding the Phoenix to one perimeter make on 23 attempts.

Northeastern rode the momentum from Currence's buzzer-beating, transition layup at the end of the first quarter into the second quarter, where NU opened with seven unanswered points to claim the 24-8 lead. Todd's 3-pointer with three minutes remaining in the half allowed the Huskies to double up Elon, 32-16, before Northeastern settled for the 34-21 halftime advantage.

Despite Elon trimming the NU lead to 38-30 midway through the third quarter, Northeastern responded by cranking up the jets, sprinting to the quarter break with 11 unanswered points. The Huskies' defense took care of the rest, limiting Elon to four-for-17 shooting during the fourth quarter.

Ariel Colon led the Phoenix with 18 points – 16 of which were earned during the first half.
