BOSTON – Despite sophomore
Kendall Currence setting a new career scoring high with 24 points on Friday night, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to slow down the streaky 3-point shooting of James Madison as the Huskies received the 86-64 loss from the Dukes at Cabot Center.
Currence scored 16 points during the fourth quarter, where she shot identical five-for-six marks from both the field and the free throw line. Rookie forward
Mide Oriyomi logged 13 points during her second start of the 2019-20 season, registering five rebounds, two blocks and a steal across her season high, 37 minutes of court time.
Senior guard
Shannon Todd fittingly tallied her 1,000th career point on a 3-pointer – her first triple of the night – midway through the opening quarter. With the basket, Todd became the 22nd member to join the Huskies' 1,000-point club, following in the footsteps of her prior-year teammates,
Jess Genco and
Gabby Giacone.
Todd's milestone 3-pointer brought Northeastern (11-14, 7-7 CAA) within 9-7 of the visitors before James Madison (20-4, 11-2 CAA) staged a 13-3 scoring run to carry a double-digit lead into the second quarter. There, the Dukes flexed their perimeter strength, shooting perfect from downtown – seven-for-seven – as JMU stormed out to the 51-29 halftime lead.
Northeastern rallied behind Currence to win the fourth quarter, 23-16.
Kamiah Smalls led the Dukes with 25 points while Jackie Benitez buried seven of her team's 13 3-pointers to follow with 21 points. Kiki Jefferson and Lexie Barrier matched 13-point scoring lines with Jefferson adding seven rebounds.
