Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huskies bested by Seahawks in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Receiving the team high, 12 points, from rookie guard Mossi Staples on Friday night, the Northeastern women's basketball team matched its intensity against UNCW, despite winding up on the wrong side of the 61-48 result at Trask Coliseum.

Staples led Northeastern (12-15, 8-8 CAA) in scoring for the first time during her freshman campaign, shooting five-for-nine from the field while registering three steals. Kendall Currence joined Staples in double figures off the bench, logging 10 points and four rebounds during 34 minutes of action.

Senior forward Ayanna Dublin paced the NU starters with 10 points and seven rebounds while Alexis Hill added eight points, two boards, three steals and a block. Stella Clark was kept scoreless for the first time during her junior season.

Northeastern trailed, 4-0, from the tip but rallied to force 14 first-half turnovers from UNCW (8-18, 5-10 CAA), which carried the 24-19 lead into the locker room. While Dublin appeared to have the inside answer to Lacey Suggs's 3-pointer that had opened the third quarter, the Seahawks managed to turn the sequence into an 8-2 scoring run to establish their first double-digit lead.

NU misfired on each of its seven 3-point attempts during the night and was unable to slide any closer than nine points of UNCW during the second half.

GiGi Smith led the Seahawks with 21 points off the bench while Suggs scored her 1,000th career point as part of her 18-point, six-rebound evening.
