Cross selected by Buffalo Beauts in 2020 NWHL Draft

BOSTON— Defenseman Codie Cross of the Northeastern women's hockey team was selected ninth overall by the Buffalo Beauts in the 2020 National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft on Tuesday evening. The six teams that make up the NWHL will make their third through fifth round picks on Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m.

"I am so excited for Codie, that she will have the opportunity to continue her career," remarked head coach Dave Flint. "The NWHL is getting a dynamic puck handling defenseman who will have an immediate impact in the league."

"I am just super excited to continue playing and can't wait to get started in the fall," said Cross.

Cross was selected in the second round by the Beauts. She finished her career with the Huskies with 62 points, the 11th-most all-time in defender scoring in program history. Cross leaves Northeastern as a three-time Hockey East tournament champion, a two-time Hockey East regular season champion and a Beanpot champion.

The Airdrie, Alberta native had a memorable final season with the Huskies, posting a career-high 74 blocks and tying a career-high with 16 points. Cross scored the game-winning goal that clinched the Huskies' Hockey East regular season title in overtime against UConn during the 2019-20 campaign as well.

Cross becomes Northeastern's seventh draft pick in the NWHL since the league's inception in 2015. The blue-liner will join former Hockey East rival goaltender Carly Jackson of the University of Maine who was selected in the first round by the Beauts.
