CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Tyson Walker scored a game-high 20 points,
Shaquille Walters added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and
Chris Doherty tallied a career-high 11 points to lead Northeastern (6-5, 5-0 CAA) to a 67-62 victory over the College of Charleston (5-7, 3-2 CAA) on Saturday at TD Arena. The Huskies grabbed a season-high 41 rebounds and are 5-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Jason Strong was the fourth player to reach double figures for the Huskies, finishing with 13 points and made 3-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. Walker reached 20 or more points for the second consecutive game, and has tallied double figures in eight straight games, including 10-of-11 this season. With the win, head coach
Bill Coen is just three shy of matching Northeastern's all-time record of 250 set by Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun from 1972-86.
The game featured 14 lead changes and 12 ties. The Huskies found themselves down 60-57 with 3:36 remaining, but Walker and Walters combined for an 8-0 run to give Northeastern a 65-60 lead with 1:04 left in the game. The Cougars added a pair of free throws from Brenden Tucker to cut the deficit to just three and earned a defensive stop to give the Cougars a chance to tie the game. Charleston missed a 3-pointer to try and tie the game with 11 seconds left, but the ball pinned between the backboard and basket to give Charleston a second chance with the possession arrow in its favor. Following a timeout, the Huskies came up with a second straight stop by creating a turnover and Walters made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to ice the game.
Tucker led the Cougars with 17 points, coming off a career-high 35 points in his last game against Drexel. Zep Jasper tallied 14 points and DeAngelo Epps was the final CofC player to reach double figures with 11.
The two teams will play again on Sunday at 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed on
FloHoops.com. The Huskies will be looking for their third 6-0 start to CAA play since joining the conference back in 2005-06 (2012-13 and 2008-09).
