BOSTON - Jahmyl Telfort scored a career-high 23 points in the second half, while
Shaquille Walters and
Chris Doherty each had double-doubles to lead Northeastern (8-5, 7-0 CAA) to a 72-63 victory over James Madison (6-5, 1-1 CAA) on Saturday inside the Cabot Center on Solomon Court. The Huskies have won seven straight games and their 7-0 start in Colonial Athletic Association play is their second-best in program history and the 11th-best in CAA history.
With the win, head coach
Bill Coen moves within one of legendary coach Jim Calhoun's record of 250 at Northeastern from 1972-86. Coach Coen ranks second in CAA history with 170 victories in regular season and postseason play.
Tyson Walker reached double figures for the 30th time in his short career, and 10th straight game, with 12 points and a game-high five assists. Walters finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Doherty scored 10 points to go with his career-high 10 rebounds.
The first half was back-and-forth with Northeastern leading by six at the break, 37-31. After the Dukes pulled with three, Telfort went on a personal 13-1 run to extend the Huskies lead to 13, 52-39, with 13:26 remaining in the game. The Huskies would extend their lead all the way to 20 points and held the lead for 31 minutes in the game.
Just two JMU players reached double figures as Preseason CAA Player of the Year Matt Lewis finished with 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting, and Jalen Hodge scored 14 off the bench for the Dukes.Â
The Huskies look to match their best-ever start to CAA play at 8-0 tomorrow as the two teams will play their final game of this two-game series inside the Cabot Center. Game time is set for Noon and will be televised on NESN. Fans can also listen live on
