BOSTON - Jason Strong tallied a season-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while
Tyson Walker scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to lead Northeastern (3-5, 2-0 CAA) to a 66-58 win over Elon (3-3, 0-2 CAA) on Sunday inside the Cabot Center on Solomon Court. The Huskies led wire-to-wire and are off to a 2-0 start in league play for the second consecutive season.
Shaquille Walters posted 15 points and grabbed five boards for the Huskies.
Jahmyl Telfort made his first collegiate start, finishing with 10 points and a season-high three steals.
Northeastern got off to a fast start with a 19-4 run, making 9-of-12 shots just under five minutes in to the game. The Huskies would extend that lead all the way up to 18 points with 3:17 left until halftime, and would take a 10-point lead at the break, 35-25.
Elon fought back to get within three points, 53-50, with 4:36 remaining in the game. Walker responded for the Huskies with four straight points, including a nifty steal and layup, and seemed to have the answer for Northeastern each time the Phoenix got within three or four points. NU would hold off the rally to edge the Phoenix by eight and take the season sweep.
Hunter McIntosh led three Elon players in double figures with 17 points. Hunter Woods and Ikenna Ndugba each tallied 10 points for the Phoenix.
The Huskies will play their only home-and-home series this week with travel partner Hofstra. Northeastern will travel to Hempstead, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday, before hosting the Pride on Saturday at Noon.
