Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Currence's 23 points not enough for NU against Drexel

BOSTON – Receiving 23 bench points from junior Kendall Currence on Saturday, the Northeastern women's basketball team fought hard during its weekend opener against Drexel despite playing to the 79-64 defeat at Cabot Center.

After recording 18 points during Tuesday's win at James Madison, Currence enjoyed the best shooting day of her career on Saturday, funneling in 10 of her 12 field goal attempts during 34 minutes of action. The NU guard tracked down four rebounds and paced the Huskies with five assists while registering her third career 20-point scoring game.

Ayanna Dublin and Mide Oriyomi posted identical 10-point, five-rebound lines for Northeastern (3-7, 2-5 CAA) with Dublin also dishing out four assists. Stella Clark contributed nine points, six rebounds and four assists to the Huskies' cause as well.

Northeastern spotted Drexel (8-4, 5-2 CAA) the game's opening seven points, which sent the Huskies into a called timeout at the 5:35 mark of the first quarter.

After weathering Drexel's 54-percent first half shooting clip and facing a 27-15 deficit, Northeastern began to catch fire offensively. The Huskies managed to net six straight baskets during the tail end of the second quarter, shaving the Dragons' lead down to 37-29 by halftime.

Northeastern continued to match Drexel shot-for-shot during the third quarter, where NU landed seven of its 10 field goal attempts. With less than three minutes remaining in the period, Currence followed her 3-point jumper with a flashy driving layup, helping the Huskies keep within six points of the Dragons at 53-47.

However, Drexel straddled the quarter break with 10 unanswered points, building the double-digit lead it held through the remainder of the contest. The Dragons finished the day shooting 57 percent from the field (30-for-53) while sporting the +7 advantage in turnover differential (+9 in points off turnovers).

Hannah Nihill led Drexel with 21 points and three steals while Keishana Washington recorded 17 points, eight assists and three steals. Maura Hendrixson also charted 15 points, four rebounds and seven assists.
