BOSTON – Led by sophomoreÂ
Mide Oriyomi's game-high, 22-point performance on Tuesday, the Northeastern women's basketball team rallied to close within four points of Delaware inside the game's final three minutes, despite playing to the 68-61 defeat at Cabot Center.
Â
Oriyomi registered her second consecutive 20-point scoring game, elevating her career scoring high by two points from Monday's CAA opener against the Blue Hens. The sophomore forward hit eight of her 13 attempts from the field on Tuesday during 37 minutes of court time, tacking on five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Â
Stella Clark finished with the devilish six-point, six-rebound and six-assist stat line while fellow veteranÂ
Ayanna Dublin chalked eight points and six rebounds.
Â
Northeastern (0-4, 0-2 CAA) caught a breath of offensive production from its three bench players – all freshmen – who combined to outscore the Delaware reserves, 16-10.Â
Izzy Larsen paced the NU rookies with six points and four rebounds,Â
Maddie Vizza logged a season high, 26 minutes, and
Leyla Öztürk added five points, four rebounds plus one block and one steal.
Â
Delaware (5-1, 2-0 CAA) witnessed three starters land their scoring in double figures. Jasmine Dickey and Paris McBride posted respective 19- and 16-point lines for the Blue Hens while Ty Battle recorded 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals.
Â
Northeastern trailed by as many as 15 points with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter. Öztürk converted a three-point play to open the fourth quarter and energize the Huskies' bench, helping NU begin its comeback bid.
Â
Oriyomi's midcourt steal and fast break layup with three minutes to go brought the Huskies to their feet, capping the 7-0 NU run that narrowed Delaware's lead to 57-53. Northeastern received another basket from Oriyomi to keep the margin at 59-55 near the two-minute mark, but the Blue Hens pulled away late to seal the win.
GAME DEDICATIONS
Northeastern had dedicated their two CAA-opening games on Monday and Tuesday to the memories of Atatiana Jefferson and Elijah McClain as part of the team's season-long Black Lives Matter and End Racism conversation. The Huskies will dedicate every home game during their 2020-21 season to a victim of racism and police brutality.
