BOSTON – Chris Doherty recorded his second double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) as a Husky and the Northeastern (1-2) defense held Boston University (1-2) to a 1-of-18 night from three as the Huskies men's basketball held off the Terriers on opening night at Matthews Arena, 49-48.
Â
Northeastern, which led by five at halftime, led by as many as 13 midway through the second half before Boston University chipped away over the last 10 minutes to make it a one possession game in the final minute. It marked the first time that both teams finished below 50 points since 1982, a game that Northeastern also won 49-48.
Â
Doherty was the lone Husky in double-figures on the night for a Northeastern team that shot 38% on the evening (18-of-47) and 2-of-18 from three. Walter Whyte led the Terriers with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting while Javante McCoy also reached double-figures with 10 points (4-of-12).Â
Â
• Both teams got off to slow starts, with the score tied at 11 midway through the first half, and went up by five at the break thanks to a thunderous dunk from
Shaquille Walters (nine points, six rebounds, three assists) at the buzzer.
Â
• The Huskies came out hotter in the second half, beginning with a 9-2 run to open up a 12-point lead with 13:00 to go, capped by a runner from
Jahmyl Telfort (nine points, 4-of-9 shooting) with the shot clock winding down.
Â
• A 7-0 Boston University run down the stretch, though, whittled the Northeastern lead down to one with two seconds remaining, but the Huskies were able to hold onÂ
Â
• Prior to the game, Northeastern honored head coach
Bill Coen for becoming the program's all-time winningest coach last season.Â
Â
Northeastern will head back on the road for the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and will take on Duquesne in its opening game on Friday at 6:45 p.m.
