Chris Doherty had a career-high 17 points, and 15 rebounds and redshirt senior
Jason Strong tallied a season-best 14 points and career-best 10 rebounds as the Northeastern basketball team (4-4) returned home with a 66-56 win over Detroit Mercy (0-6) on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern, playing with a shortened bench due to injuries, never trailed in the game, opening up a 9-0 lead from the opening tip and never looking back. The Huskies led by as many as 16 in the game before seeing Detroit battle back to trim the advantage to one point with 8:58 to play, but NU responded with an 8-0 run to go back up by nine and keep a three-possession lead for good.
Antoine Davis was the story for Detroit, finishing with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-22 shooting (5-of-14 from three) to go along with three assists and two steals for a Titans team that shot 40% from the field (24-of-60) and 32% from deep (7-of-22).
Northeastern shot 38% (23-of-61) overall and 7-of-25 from three while tying a season-high with 17 assists including 12 dimes on 14 made field goals in the first half. Doherty and Strong led four Huskies in double-figures, and were joined by
Jahmyl Telfort (15 points on 7-of-16 shooting) and
Vito Cubrilo (12 points, three assists)Â
• Northeastern started the game off strong with a dominating 16-point lead (28-6) in the first eight minutes, forcing an early Titans timeout.
• At the end of the first half, the Huskies led Detroit Mercy, 36-25. Junior
Vito Cubrilo recorded a career-high 12 points and Strong added 10 points. Cubrilo started the game 3-of-3 from beyond the arc before finishing 4-of-7.
• Doherty finished with his third double-double of the season, recorded double-digit rebounds for the fifth straight game, while Strong recorded his first.Â
• The team combined for 46 total rebounds, led by Doherty (15), Strong (10) and sophomore
Glen McClintock (9).
