ELON, N.C. – Elon (4-10, 1-0) used a 62% first-half shooting performance and hit 12 threes in the game to jump out to an early lead over the Northeastern men's basketball team (6-6, 0-1) in the CAA opener on Wednesday at the Schar Center, 79-62.

Jahmyl Telfort had a team-high 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting for the Huskies, while
Tyreek Scott-Grayson added 15 points (4-of-11) shooting along with five rebounds and two blocks in his 100th career game for a Huskies team that shot 34% overall (18-of-53), 23% from deep (5-of-22) and 21-of-25 (84%) from the stripe.
Chris Doherty added eight points and eight rebounds for the visitors.

Darius Burford (23 points; 11-of-18 overall) and Hunter McIntosh (20 points; 7-of-13 overall) were the story for the Phoenix, leading four players in double figures. Elon outrebounded NU 38-30 in the game and shot 52% overall (31-of-60) and 46% from three (12-of-26). Elon led by as many as 22 in the game before the Huskies cut it to as little as 10 with 2:59 to go.

• Elon shot 62% in the first half, including an 8-of-12 mark from deep, to open an early double-digit lead to take a commanding advantage. Burford was 6-of-8 for 12 points, while Gillens-Butler added eight points, three boards and three assists for the hosts.

• The Phoenix used a 19-2 run over a five-minute span to take a 31-10 lead with 8:11 left until the break before Northeastern responded with a 13-3 run to claw within 11 at 34-23, with 11 of those points coming from Telfort.

• Elon, though, closed the half on a 12-1 run to take a 46-24 lead into the locker room, capped by a three from Gillens-Butler.

• The Huskies started the second half a perfect 10-of-10 from the line to trim the deficit down to 17 with 12:17 to go, including a 6-of-6 showing from Scott-Grayson.

• A quick 7-0 run over less than two minutes brought the Huskies within 10 with 2:59 to play, but a pair of late threes from McIntosh put it out of reach.

• Northeastern was without the services of
Glen McClintock,
Alexander Nwagha,
Shaquille Walters and
Connor Braun on Wednesday, while
Coleman Stucke returned to the lineup for the first time since Nov. 19.
