BOSTON – With senior
Stella Clark's 27-point performance to reach exactly 1,000 career points and
Maddie Vizza setting the program's single-game freshman 3-point record on Sunday, the Northeastern women's basketball team scripted a magical Senior Day victory against Towson, 72-62, at Cabot Center.
Â
Entering the day 27 points shy of achieving the four-digit milestone, Clark delivered precisely that to become the 23rd member of the Huskies' elite scoring club. Clark – who also recorded six rebounds and seven assists – scored her final two points in storybook fashion after being sent to a near-empty free throw line with 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation and the game out of reach.
Â
Vizza staged a masterful 3-point shooting display for Northeastern (4-11, 3-9 CAA), accounting for seven of the team's 13 perimeter makes. The rookie sharpshooter became the first NU freshman to hit seven or more 3-pointers in a game for the Huskies – a feat that has now been achieved 11 times by seven of the program's players.
Â
Sharing in Senior Day celebrations with Clark,
Ayanna Dublin provided seven points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Huskies.
Kendall Currence contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals to the NU cause as well.
Â
Locked in an 11-11 tie at the end of the first quarter, Northeastern offered Towson (11-4, 6-2 CAA) little separation during the second quarter, though fell behind, 24-20, as the teams broke for a timeout with 4:36 left in the half. Vizza soon righted the ship for the Huskies, draining three consecutive 3-pointers after the stoppage to single-handedly stage a 9-0 scoring run, helping NU claim the 31-28 halftime lead.
Â
After shooting five-for-seven behind the arc during the first half, Vizza hit her sixth downtown basket to push Northeastern's lead to 41-36 during the third quarter. However, the Tigers were quick to claw back, receiving a triple from Skye Williams that knotted the game at 41-41 three and a half minutes outside the quarter break.
Clark answered the bell down the stretch, burying the look that put the Huskies up, 48-44, going into the fourth quarter. There, she and Currence funneled in four more 3-pointers for the Huskies as NU stormed out to the 60-47 advantage.
Â
Williams led Towson with 20 points while Allie Kubek charted 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers.
