WILMINGTON, N.C. – With its CAA Rookie of the Week,
Maddie Vizza, dropping five 3-pointers and pacing the squad with 16 points on Saturday, the Northeastern women's basketball team collected its second straight conference win by defeating UNCW, 63-52, at Trask Coliseum.
Â
Less than a week after setting the Huskies' freshman single-game 3-point record, Vizza logged yet another dazzling display behind the arc. The first-year guard shot 4-for-4 from downtown during the second half, where she offloaded 13 points to aid the NU comeback.
Â
Sophomore forward
Mide Oriyomi compiled her fourth double-double of the 2020-21 season, registering 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Stella Clark etched her sixth consecutive double-digit scoring game (14 points) and dished out six assists while
Mossi Staples hit each of her eight free throw attempts en route to 13 bench points.
Â
Facing the 30-22 deficit at halftime, Northeastern (5-11, 4-9 CAA) rallied to shoot 45 percent from the field during the second half. The Huskies outscored UNCW (3-11, 0-8 CAA) by 19 points across the game's final two quarters, including the 26-12 margin during the fourth quarter.
Â
Vizza's first 3-pointer of the day kickstarted Northeastern's 7-0 scoring run that closed the opening quarter and put NU ahead, 14-13, at the horn.
Ayanna Dublin connected on a 17-foot jumper to give the Huskies the 18-15 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Seahawks used their +10 first half rebounding advantage to deny NU looks, managing to break away with 10 unanswered points.
Â
Trailing, 37-27, inside six minutes remaining of the third quarter, Northeastern rode Clark's hot hand to chip away at the UNCW lead. Vizza fired a 3-pointer to bring the Huskies within one possession at 37-34 while Oriyomi proceeded to sneak in one of her own before the quarter break.
Â
Oriyomi and Vizza's back-to-back 3-pointers to open the fourth quarter provided Northeastern with its first lead of the second half at 43-40. Clark and Staples soon joined in the 3-point fun as the Huskies staged a 17-5 scoring run to claim the 60-47 lead.
Â
Northeastern finished shooting 8-for-13 around the perimeter during the second half while defensively keeping the hosts to 35 percent shooting for the game.Â
Â
Carol-Anne Obusek led UNCW with 16 points and nine rebounds. Za'Nautica Downs contributed 15 points off the Seahawks' bench and tracked down five rebounds.
