BOX SCORE (PDF) | POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jeff Costello went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Corey DiLoreto went 3-for-4 to lead Northeastern (0-1) in an 8-6 defeat to No. 17 Wake Forest (1-0) on Friday at David F. Couch Ballpark. The Huskies doubled up the Demon Deacons in hits, 12-6, but Wake Forest used the long ball with a grand slam and three-run home run to claim the opening game win in this three-game series.

Scott Holzwasser extended his streak to 18 straight games of reaching base safely, going 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Ben Malgeri went 2-for-5 with a double in his debut for the Huskies, while Max Viera singled in his first collegiate game. Ian Fair and Spenser Smith also drove in runs for the Huskies.

Right-handed starter Kyle Murphy tossed 5.0 solid innings, allowing five hits, five runs and struck out seven. After surrendering a grand slam in the first inning, Murphy retired the final seven batters he faced in the game and allowed just one hit over his final four innings in a no decision. Right-hander Owen Langan retired 6-of-7 batters he faced in the game, while Brandon Dufault (0-1) was the tough-luck pitcher of record that struck out the side in the eighth, but surrendered a two-out, three-run home run after an error prolonged the inning for Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons were opportunistic, scoring 7-of-8 runs courtesy of the home run. Shane Muntz delivered a grand slam after falling behind 0-2 on an inside fastball in the bottom of the first inning, and Brock Wilken homered to left field to plate three go-ahead runs as the 17th-ranked Demon Deacons rallied in the eighth inning to claim the victory.

Game two of this three-game set will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will be televised on the ACC Network.
