BOSTON – With freshman guard
Maddie Vizza accounting for six of its record-tying 15 3-point field goals on Sunday, the Northeastern women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game, rolling to the 68-39 victory against Hofstra at Cabot Center.
Â
Coming off her second straight CAA Rookie of the Week mention on Monday, Vizza led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 6-for-8 from downtown while dishing out four assists. The NU freshman has now totaled 22 3-point field goals across her last four games (5.5 per outing), calibrated at her 61-percent shooting rate during the stretch.
Â
Kendall Currence and
Stella Clark provided the Huskies with three perimeter baskets apiece, finishing with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Clark added four rebounds, five assists and five steals to her line while
Mide Oriyomi paired nine points with the team high, 14 rebounds.
Â
Northeastern (7-11, 6-9 CAA) reached its program record for single-game 3-pointers for the second time under the leadership of head coach
Kelly Cole, having previously done so at Vermont in Dec. 2017. The Huskies' 68-percent 3-point shooting mark on Sunday (15-for-22) is also tied for the fourth highest single-game percentage achieved by an NCAA Division I program this season.
Â
Ayanna Dublin's emphatic three-point play late in the first quarter capped Northeastern's nine-point scoring run that put the Huskies in front early, 13-7. Shortly after, Currence and Clark managed to squeeze in a pair of 3-pointers before the quarter break, helping NU control the 20-11 lead at the horn.
Â
Having led by as many as 16 points during the second quarter, Northeastern broke the game at the start of the second half. Vizza and Clark opened the third quarter scoring with a trio of triples, allowing NU to control the 45-21 advantage.
Â
With the victory well on ice, rookie walk-on
Amyrah Sapenter put the finishing touches on the Huskies' record-tying day. During the closing minutes, Sapenter knocked down an open look from the left wing for her first collegiate basket – the 15th and final 3-pointer on Northeastern's game card.
Â
Jaylen Hines led Hofstra (6-11, 4-7 CAA) with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Jahsyni Knight registered nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
