NEWARK, Del. – With
Kendall Currence,
Stella Clark and
Mossi Staples leading its offense on Saturday, the Northeastern women's basketball team kept first-place Delaware in check through three and a half quarters, despite succumbing to the Blue Hens, 59-47, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
Currence drained her first two 3-point looks of the opening quarter on her way to finishing with the team high, 11 points, scoring in double figures for the fourth consecutive game. Clark registered 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Huskies while Staples added 10 points and two steals.
Â
Ayanna Dublin notched her second straight 10-rebound game, though Northeastern (3-9, 2-7 CAA) was overpowered on the glass, 44-32. NU was also doubled up in offensive rebounds, 18-9, leading Delaware (13-2, 10-1 CAA) to achieve the +15 edge in second chance points.
Â
Northeastern charged out to the 15-11 lead after the first quarter and proceeded to keep the Blue Hens off the scoreboard through the opening five minutes of the second quarter. After Brynn Wade's free throw during the closing seconds of the half had capped Delaware's 8-0 scoring run and tied the game at 19-19, Staples replied with the buzzer-beating, pull-up 3-pointer that put the Huskies in front at the halftime horn.
Â
Staples dialed up another perimeter basket during the early stages of the fourth quarter, knotting the game at 39-39 with her look from the left corner. However, the Blue Hens turned in a 12-2 scoring run to separate themselves from the Huskies, keeping NU to two made field goals during the final five minutes of play.
Â
Jasmine Dickey led Delaware with 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Ty Battle followed with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
