BROOKLINE, Mass. - Right-handed pitcher
Sebastian Keane tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out nine and allowing just two hits to lead Northeastern (5-5) over UMass Lowell (1-7), 2-0, on Friday at Friedman Diamond. Keane did not issue a single walk and threw 102 pitches.
Ryan Cervone walked with the bases loaded in the third inning, and
Danny Crossen drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to left field as the Huskies led 2-0. Keane did not allow a runner to reach second base and did not allow a walk for the first time in his young career.
Ben Malgeri singled and
Max Viera doubled in the game.
In the opener, the Huskies jumped out in front 7-3 with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a
Scott Holzwasser double and Crossen single, each driving in two runs.
Kyle Murphy left after throwing 6.0 innings, scattering four hits, three earned runs and struck out eight.
UMass Lowell would respond in the seventh inning with five unearned runs, including a two-out grand slam by Cam Climo to left field to take an 8-7 lead over the Huskies. Malgeri was hit-by-a-pitch to start the eighth inning and advanced to third base after a failed pickoff to place the tying run in scoring position with no outs. UML's Henry Funaro pitched out of the jam with two strikeouts and the River Hawks added two insurance runs on the ninth inning on a one-out triple to earn the 10-7 victory over the Huskies.
Viera led the way for the Huskies offensively, going 3-for-8 on the day with a double. Holzwasser extended his on-base streak to 28 straight games, earning four walks and driving in two runs with a double. Keane's complete-game shutout was the first nine-inning complete game since
David Stiehl tossed a three-hit shutout against College of Charleston on April 19, 2019 at Friedman Diamond.
