BROOKLINE, Mass. - Dominant starting pitching by right-handed pitchers
Cam Schlittler and
Sebastian Keane, along with timely hitting from
Jeff Costello,
Spenser Smith and four hits by
Ben Malgeri led Northeastern (10-5) to a sweep over UMass (7-8), 5-2 and 4-3, on Saturday at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in the nightcap to complete the series sweep and push their winning streak to six.
Schlittler (1-0) struck out a career-high nine batters over 5.0 strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run. Keane fanned a career-best 10 in game two, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, and had no walks for the second straight outing. RHP
Eric Yost (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win in relief, pitching a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout, while
Brandon Dufault and
Jake Gigliotti earned saves for the Huskies.
Costello drove in the game-winning run in the final game of the series with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning after
Danny Crossen doubled to plate the tying run for Northeastern. Costello finished 2-for-4 with a team-best two RBIs.
In the opener, NU jumped out in front with three runs in the bottom of the first inning as
Corey DiLoreto doubled and
Kyle Peterson singled to drive in runs for the Huskies. Schlittler would make that stand on the mound, while right-handed hurlers
Owen Langan and
Brian Rodriguez were able to get the backend of the bullpen to closer Dufault who retired 3-of-4 batters faced for his first save of the season.
Malgeri finished 2-for-2 with one RBI, and
Teddy Beaudet went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Northeastern in the first game this afternoon. The Huskies batted over .500 for the three-game series with runners in scoring position to earn the first season series sweep.
NU will travel to Bryant for a single game this Tuesday at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed on
