NORFOLK, Va. -
Spenser Smith drove in a career-high four runs, going 2-for-4, and
Jeff Costello went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI to lead Northeastern (2-3) in a tough 10-8 defeat to Old Dominion (7-2) on Friday at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Huskies led 8-5 in the eighth inning, but the Monarchs rallied for five runs in the final two innings, including a walk-off, two-out, two-run home run by Kyle Battle in the ninth.
Right-handed pitcher
David Stiehl threw 3.0 strong innings in relief, scattering three hits, one run, no earned runs, and struck out one. RHP
Brandon Dufault entered in the eighth inning with two outs in an 8-7 game, and proceeded to strike out the batter, but the Huskies failed to record the out due to a passed ball and ODU reached base. ODU's Robbie Petracci then skied a ball to shallow center field that dropped in-between both middle infielders and the center fielder for Northeastern to tie the game for the Monarchs at 8-8.
Dufault walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, but retired the next two after a sac bunt and strikeout. Battle then homered on the second pitch to left field to give the Monarchs the come-from-behind victory.
The Huskies committed three errors in the game that led to a pair of unearned runs. RHP
Kyle Murphy made the start, working 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, striking out two and walked four.
Scott Holzwasser and
Jared Dupere each had hits for the Huskies to extend their on-base streaks to 23 and 20, respectively.
Game two of this three-game series will be on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on
