BOX SCORE (PDF) | POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE
NORFOLK, Va. - Right-handed pitcher
Cam Schlittler tossed 6.0 strong innings, scattering five hits, striking out four and allowed just one run, while
Max Viera went 2-for-4 and drove in a run to lead Northeastern (3-4) in an extra-inning defeat, 3-2 (11), to Old Dominion (8-3) on Sunday at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Scott Holzwasser singled to extend his on-base streak to 25 consecutive games for the Huskies.
Ben Malgeri and
Jeff Costello were the only other Northeastern batters to record a hit as ODU pitching limited the Huskies to five hits, while Northeastern hurlers held the Monarchs to seven hits in the pitcher's duel. RHP
Eric Yost retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning, and RHP
Thomas Balboni threw 2.0 scoreless to send the game into extra innings.
After Viera drove in the go-ahead run for the Huskies in the top of the 11th inning on a sac fly, the Monarchs' Robbie Petracci doubled down the first-base line to tie the game and Brock Gagliardi followed with a base hit to center field to plate Petracci as ODU picked up its second walk-off win in the three-game series. RHP
Brandon Dufault (0-3) pitched out of a jam in the 10th inning, recording consecutive strikeouts after ODU had runners at second and third with no outs, but surrendered back-to-back hits in the 11th in the loss.
The game featured the new extra-inning rule that Major League Baseball adopted last season where the last batted out is placed on second base to start the inning, beginning in the 10th. Neither team managed to score in the 10th, but both were able to push a run across in the 11th.
The Huskies will return to Friedman Diamond for a non-conference game on Tuesday against Albany. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed on
Howlin' Huskies Productions. Fans are still not permitted at any Northeastern home events.
