HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Right-handed pitcher
Cam Schlittler tossed 7.0 strong innings and struck out a career-high 11 batters, while
Ben Malgeri went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, two runs scored and two doubles to lead Northeastern (12-6, 1-0 CAA) over Hofstra (9-7, 0-1 CAA), 8-2, on Friday in the Colonial Athletic Association baseball opener for both teams at University Field. The Huskies pounded out 13 hits and limited the Pride to just five.
Jared Dupere went 1-for-2, with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs,
Jeff Costello finished 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and
Scott Holzwasser extended his on-base streak to 36 games with a single in the sixth inning.
Ryan Cervone,
JP Olson and
Spenser Smith all added two hits for the Huskies.

Brian Rodriguez tossed the final 2.0 innings, facing one over the minimum, striking out one. Schlittler improves to 2-0 on the season and the Huskies are now 4-1 when he starts on the mound.
Malgeri started the scoring for Northeastern with a double off the fence in center field to plate Smith who singled through the right side in the third inning. NU tacked on three more runs as Dupere, Costello and Cervone each drove in runs as the Huskies led 4-1.
Olson tallied his second double of the season to start the sixth inning and advanced to third base on a bunt single by Smith. Then Malgeri delivered his second double of the game to plate two more runs, followed by a bunt single by Holzwasser and sac fly by Dupere. Costello then singled through the left side to plate the fourth run of the inning and close out the scoring for the Huskies.
