WILMINGTON, N.C. -
Jared Dupere crushed his 20th home run to center field, a two-run shot, and right-handed pitcher
Sebastian Keane (6-1) tossed 7.0 strong innings, scattering four hits, one run, struck out six and did not issue a walk to lead the top-seeded Northeastern Huskies (34-10) past No. 4 Charleston (27-25), 5-1, in an elimination game of the CAA tournament on Saturday at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW. The Huskies advance to face No. 2 seed UNCW in the CAA title game at 5 p.m. on
FloBaseball.
Both pitchers were dominant through the first five innings as the game entered the sixth scoreless. After a pitching change for Charleston,
Max Viera tripled down the right-field line and Dupere sent a high blast to center field to drive in the game's first two runs. The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Northeastern led 2-1 after six innings of play.
The top-ranked Huskies tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles by
Scott Holzwasser and
Danny Crossen.
Ben Malgeri led Northeastern at the dish, going 3-for-4, and RHP
Brian Rodriguez tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
With his home run, Dupere ties the single-season school record of 20, matching Frank Pesanello in 2008.
The Huskies will need to beat UNCW twice to win the CAA Championship. This is the second time the Huskies and Seahawks will battle in the title game. Northeastern came from the elimination bracket in 2018 and defeated UNCW, 3-2, that year before dropping the winner take all game, 7-4, in Harrisonburg, Va.
