Northeastern Takes Series Opener over Hofstra, 13-1

BOX SCORE (PDF)

BROOKLINE, Mass. -
Jared Dupere crushed two home runs, matching Carlos Peña's 13 in 1998 which is sixth in school history, while Max Viera and Danny Crossen each drove in two runs to lead Northeastern (24-6, 12-0 CAA) past Hofstra (15-16, 6-10 CAA), 13-1, in the opening game of this four-game Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at Friedman Diamond on Friday. Right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler (5-0) won his fifth consecutive start, scattering five hits and striking out six to lead the Huskies to their 14th straight win, best in the NCAA.

Dupere tied head coach Mike Glavine on the single-season top-10 list with his 12th home run of the season in the third inning and then smacked his 13th homer of the season in the sixth inning for his second multi-home run game of the year. Viera connected on his second home run of the season in the third inning, while Jeff Costello added three of hits for Northeastern and one RBI.

The Huskies wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, pushing three runs across in the bottom of the first inning after singles by Costello and Scott Holzwasser, followed by a double and RBI by Crossen. NU tacked on two more runs in the third after back-to-back jacks by Dupere and Viera, and added three more runs in the fifth inning to bust the game wide open after RBIs from Viera, Crossen and Ben Malgeri.

Dupere skied a two-run home run to the opposite field in the sixth inning and Costello tacked on another run with a RBI single in the seventh inning as the lead grew to 10, 11-1. Corey DiLoreto blasted a pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning for his first homer of the season as the Huskies routed the Pride in the series opener.
