Northeastern Summer Baseball Notebook

BOSTON — After a historic season in which Northeastern baseball won their first CAA Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament bid, members of the team have not stopped their run of impressive performances this summer. Players are taking part in some of the most competitive summer baseball leagues in the country, putting up solid numbers in a field of top prospects.

Summer leagues across the Northeast include the famed Cape Cod Baseball League, the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, the New England Collegiate Baseball League and more. A few weeks into the season, Northeastern players have proven their worth.

Cape Cod Baseball League

Ben Malgeri - OF, Harwich Mariners, Stratham, N.H.
  • Batting .262 with a slugging percentage of .405 in 50 plate appearances
  • Hit two home runs and has 4 stolen bases through 14 games for the Mariners
  • Selected by the Detroit Tigers with the 525th pick in the 18th round in the 2021 MLB Draft
Cam Schlittler - P, Harwich Mariners, East Walpole, Mass.
  • Started three games with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.75
  • Pitched 12 innings and recorded nine strikeouts
Eric Yost - P, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Ossining, N.Y.
  • Made four relief appearances over the season, tallying eight strikeouts
  • Holds an ERA of 4.90 through 7.1 IP, issuing just three walks
Sebastian Keane - P, Chatham Anglers, North Andover, Mass.
  • Made two starts for the Anglers and four appearances, striking out 13
  • Through 12 IP, has a WHIP of 1.50 and has issued just four walks
Brandon Dufault - P, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Windham, N.H.
  • Made three appearances, allowing zero runs and recording a WHIP of 1.154
  • Surrendered just three hits in 4.1 IP with six strikeouts
  • Selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 471st overall pick in the 16th round in the 2021 MLB Draft
Jeff Costello - OF, Orleans Firebirds, Lexington, Mass.
  • Made his first appearance July 18 against Yarmouth-Dennis
  • Went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI 

New England Collegiate Baseball League

Danny Crossen - INF, Mystic Schooners, Cotuit, Mass.
  • Batting .243 with five home runs through 19 games
  • Slugging .500 after driving in 13 RBIs, including a season-high 5-RBI performance July 5 against Valley
Max Viera - INF, Upper Valley Nighthawks, Greenwood Lake, N.Y.
  • Has 13 bases and gotten on base at a clip of .402 in 84 plate appearances
  • Hit two home runs and is batting .341 with 11 RBIs through 22 games 
  • Earned NECBL All-Star MVP honors after going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three stolen bases
Corey DiLoreto - INF, Mystic Schooners, Reading, Mass.
  • Appeared in three games for the Schooners, hitting .250 in eight at-bats
  • Hit 2-RBI double in game versus Newport July 14 to help his team to an 11-7 win
Spenser Smith - INF, Newport Gulls, Wellesley, Mass.
  • Batting .271 with nine RBIs through 23 games for the Gulls
  • Recorded an OPS of .802 with 15 walks in 70 at-bats
Owen Langan - P, Valley Blue Sox, North Easton, Mass.
  • Tallied five strikeouts and just two walks in 5.1 IP
  • Earned a win over Mystic with a 2.1-inning relief appearance
Thomas Balboni - P, Ocean State Waves, Naples. Fl.
  • Made seven relief appearances, including three straight scoreless ones from June 21-26
  • Struck out 11 in 9.1 IP, surrendering just four walks
Jake Gigliotti - P, Upper Valley Nighthawks, Auburn, Mass.
  • Recorded an ERA of 0.88 over the course of seven appearances, earning three wins
  • Struck out 21 in 20.1 IP, surrendering just five walks and maintaining a WHIP of 1.13

Futures Collegiate Baseball League

Dave Howarth - C, New Britain Bees, Wall, N.J.
  • Batting .216 with six RBIs in 37 at-bats on the season
  • Recorded seven walks and an OBP of .356 in 45 plate appearances
JP Olson - C, Brockton Rox, Stoughton, Mass.
  • Hitting .293 with an OBP of .339 in 62 plate appearances for the Rox
  • Driven in 8 RBI and slugged at a .379 rate
  • Earned player of the night for the Rox with a three-hit, three-RBI performance on June 16
  • Named to FCBL East All-Star Team, hitting a two-run single in the All-Star Game
Gregory Bozzo - C, Nashua Silver Nights, Basking Ridge, N.J.
  • Recorded seven hits and seven walks in 14 games for the Silver Knights
  • Named to the FCBL East All-Star Team, scoring a run in the All-Star Game
Jack Thorbahn - Two-way, Pittsfield Suns, Hingham, Mass.
  • Holding an ERA of 3.00 and struck out 10 in six games and 12 IP, including four scoreless appearances
  • Recorded a double in a 2-1 win over Vermont on June 27
Buddy Mworka - Utility, Worcester Bravehearts, Duxbury, Mass.
  • Made two appearances for Worcester, hitting .125
  • Recorded a single in a 5-4 win over Nashua on May 27
Luke Masiuk - OF, New Britain Bees, Trumbull, Conn.
  • Recorded four hits — including a triple — in 15 games for the Bees
  • Stolen five bases and walked five times
Matt Downing - P, New Britain Bees, Cheshire, Conn.
  • Appeared in one game for the Bees, striking out one against Vermont on July 10
Michael Gemma - P, Brockton Rox, Milton, Mass.
  • Pitched in five games this season, striking out 13 in just 6.1 IP
  • Earned a win on July 7 over Pittsfield, striking out four and giving up just one 
James Quinlivan - P, Brockton Rox, Milton, Mass.
  • Appeared in four games for the Rox, starting one and earning a win
  • Pitched with an ERA of 2.34 and WHIP of 0.652, hurling 14 strikeouts in 7.2 IP
Wyatt Scotti - P, Nashua Silver Knights/Harwich Mariners, Barnstable, Mass.
  • Threw 21 innings for the Silver Knights, holding an ERA of 1.28 and striking out 19 in four starts
  • Has not yet appeared for Chatham (CCBL)
Jack Beauchesne - P, Nashua Silver Knights, Chelmsford, Mass.
  • Started five games and earned a win against Brockton on July 10
  • Tallied 18 strikeouts and just four walks in 21.1 IP, good for a 1.359 WHIP
Dennis Colleran - P, Worcester Bravehearts, North Attleboro, Mass.
  • Appeared in three games, including two no-hit appearances in a row, good for an ERA of 2.25
  • Struck out 8 in 4 IP, surrendering just one walk all season

  • Has not yet appeared for Nashua this season

Mark Darakjy - OF, Delray Beach Lightning (SFCBL), Randolph, N.J.
  • Batting .284 in 35 games with nine doubles on the season
  • Holding an OBP of .436 and an OPS of .909 with 13 walks and 7 HBP
Ryan Cervone - OF, Lexington Blue Sox (IBL), Lexington, Mass.
  • Hitting .280 and slugging .400 through 10 games for the Blue Sox
  • Recorded a triple and two RBIs on June 18 against the Expos
Kyle Hoog - OF, Syracuse Spartans (NYCBL), Bayonne, N.J.
  • Driven in 12 runs and slugging .487 through 23 games
  • Batting .303 and getting on base at a clip of .393 for an OPS of .880
Justin Bosland - Two-way, Jersey Pilots (ACBl), N.J.
  • Appeared in two games as a pitcher, recording five strikeouts and a save
  • Batting .250 with three doubles and eight walks in 32 at-bats for Jersey
Nick Davis - P, Saints (CPL), Pasadena, Calif.
  • Started four games, striking out 23 over the course of 14 IP
  • Recorded a WHIP of 1.71 and surrendered just nine walks all season
Will Jones - P, Oneonta Outlaws (PGCBL), South Hamilton, Mass.
  • Pitched in 7 games, striking out 22 in relief appearances and recording an ERA of 3.29
  • Posted three straight scoreless, 2 IP performances with just one hit between them
