TOKYO - Northeastern's
Madison Mailey won gold with the Canadian women's rowing team as the six seat of the eight boat this evening in Tokyo on the Sea Forest Waterway. This triumph takes the Canadian medal count for 2020 to three gold, three silver and five bronze while taking the Canadian Olympic Rowing Medal Count to 10 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze. While this is Mailey's first Olympic appearance, she has previously competed at two World Cups, and four World Championships where she garnered two gold, one silver and one bronze.
This is the fifth Olympic medal Canada has won in this event, all of them in the last eight games, starting with the gold at Barcelona 1992. That was followed by silver at Atlanta 1996, bronze at Sydney 2000 and then a silver at London 2021.
In the Olympic Final, Canada pushed off strong from the start with a quick stroke rate of 45 and held a lead for the first 250m. As they hit the 500m mark, Canada still held that lead by about half a second over Australia. As they settled in for the next 500m, the Canadians expanded their lead and hit the midway mark with a 1.63 second gap over the Aussies. They continued to power through to the next interval, maintaining about half a boat length lead as previous world champion, New Zealand, moved up to be 1.30 seconds behind Canada. Persevering for the entirety of the race, Mailey and crew crossed the finish line at 5:59.13, .91 seconds ahead of the silver finisher, New Zealand, while China came in for the bronze.
Mailey's career at Northeastern included:
- Four straight CAA Championships qualifying her for four straight NCAA Championship appearances
- Victory at the Murphy Cup for the first time in program history
- Sitting in the stroke seat as NU defeated Penn, Columbia and Duke in 2015\
- Sat in the five seat her first year as a Husky then quickly advanced to the stroke seat for three consecutive years
