BOSTON – Returning to the court for the first time since December 19, 2021, the Northeastern women's basketball team (7-4, 1-0 CAA) kicked off the new year in style with a 77-67 victory over UNCW (3-8, 0-1 CAA), notching its first conference win of the season.
The Huskies were led by a career-high 27-point performance by senior guard
Kendall Currence, and senior guard
Katie May, who tied a career-high with 18 points. Currence was light's out from the field (11-of-16), and May sealed the victory recording 13 of her 18 points in the second half.
- Currence got the Huskies off to a quick start in the first quarter, notching 14 of the team's first 16 points.
- The Seahawks tallied a 15-10 lead early, but Northeastern responded back in the final minutes of the first with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a Currence three-pointer to push the team back in front.
- UNCW chipped away in the next three quarters to keep the contest close, but Northeastern continued to respond back to maintain the lead.
- May helped the Huskies tally their largest lead of the game at 11 (64-54) with 6:08 left in the fourth, with her fourth three-pointer of the game.
- The Seahawks trimmed Northeastern's lead down to five (70-65) with a minute left, but freshman guard Claudia Soriano tallied seven straight points for the Huskies to put the game back out of reach.
- Soriano finished the game with 12 points, six assists, two steals, and three rebounds.
- Graduate student forward Emily Calabrese chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.
- Northeastern had 16 bench points compared to UNCW's 11.
- The Huskies tallied 14 points off fast break opportunities.
