BOSTON – On its annual Boston Public Schools Day, Northeastern women's basketball (1-2) fell to the Boston College Eagles (2-2) by a score of 64-59 at Matthews Arena on Wednesday.
A close contest with seven lead changes, and seven instances of the game being tied, the Huskies were unable to close out the final quarter despite a 44% overall field goal percentage in the contest.
Sophomore
Gemima Motema led the way for the Huskies scoring a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She hit one three-pointer and grabbed four rebounds, while dishing three assists in the contest. Junior transfer
Derin Erdogan followed close behind with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting, including a three-pointer and a team-high four assists. Junior guard
Halle Idowu led team in rebounds with six.
- A back-and-forth, high-scoring first quarter saw the Eagles with a five-point lead, 24-19.
- Derin Erdogan led the way with nine points and one assist in that first frame, pacing the Huskies to keep up with the Eagles.
- The Huskies had a strong second quarter to cut the deficit at halftime, trailing 35-33.
- A seven-point surge from Gemima Motema in the frame was what sparked the Huskies to a 14-point quarter, including five points in two straight possessions.
- Northeastern started the second half hot, opening up the third quarter with an 10-4 run in the opening three minutes of the frame.
- A late defensive surge by BC kept the Huskies off the board for a three-minute stretch, but the Huskies kept the Eagles to just 12 points in the third quarter.
- The third quarter was capped off by Camille Clement breaking the scoring drought with a three-pointer to give the Huskies 51 points, as they led 51-47 entering the final quarter.
- With just under three minutes left in regulation, Gemima Motema hit a fast break layup to lead BC 59-58. On the following defensive possession, the Huskies forced a turnover, with a chance to extend the lead but were unable to convert.
- After a missed three, BC grabbed an offensive board and layup to lead 60-59. The Eagles were able to claim the victory with four free throws to end the game 64-59.
- BC controlled the boards with 38 rebounds to Northeastern's 21, which helped the Eagles to a 6-0 scoring run to end the game.
- The Huskies had a better shooting margin in the contest, going 24-of-54 (.444) from the field, and 5-of-17 from three (.294). BC ultimately held the advantage at the free-throw line, making 13-of-18 (.722).
The Huskies hit the road this weekend for two New England match ups with New Hampshire (Saturday, November 19, 1pm) and Maine (Monday, November 21, 7pm). Saturday's game will be streamed on AmericaEast.TV, and Monday's game will feature on ESPN+.
