Huskies' Hot Shooting Takes Down UNH, 63-51

DURHAM, N.H. – Kicking off a weekend road trip, the Northeastern women's basketball team (2-2) took down the University of New Hampshire (2-3) by a score of 63-51 on Saturday afternoon in Lundholm Gymnasium.

The Huskies were led by Derin Erdogan, who led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with all five makes coming from behind the arc. She also dished two assists, and grabbed two boards and one steal in the contest. She has finished in double-digits in three out of NU's four games this season.

Following close behind was Gemima Motema, notching double figures again with 10 points, a game-high six rebounds, a team-best three assists, and one steal. Gemima made two three-pointers on three attempts, and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Motema has tallied double digit points in every contest for the Huskies so far this season.

The Huskies got points from 11 different players in the contest, spreading the scoring out in a total team effort which saw quality shots in the first half, leading the Huskies to an overall shooting percentage of 46%, shooting 23 of 50 from the field.

  • The name of the game for the Huskies early was long-range offense, with threes from Derin Erdogan, Gemima Motema, and Camille Clement to open the contest, leading to a 11-2 early lead for NU.
  • The Wildcats would rally back with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the deficit.
  • The Huskies ended the first quarter shooting 55.6% from three (5-for-9) to lead 18-14 after one.
  • The three-pointers continued to fall at the start of the second quarter, as Erdogan and JaMiya Braxton hit back-to-back threes to regain momentum for the Huskies, starting the second quarter with an 8-0 scoring margin.
  • Ultimately the Huskies would end up scoring 15 unanswered points to open the second quarter. The hot shooting continued as Erdogan capped off the first half with a buzzer-beater three, giving the Huskies a 40-22 lead at the break.
  • Northeastern shot 50% (9-for-18) from behind the arc in the opening two quarters, 46% overall (15-for-32).
  • NU brought the pressure to open the second half – after scoring on their first possession, the Huskies forced back-to-back turnovers on the defensive end in an attempt to set the tone for the third quarter.
  • The Huskies only attempted one three in the third quarter in contrast to the 18 they took in the first half, and UNH was able to claw back to within 13 at the end of the third quarter, 48-35.
  • The fourth quarter started with both teams trading buckets back-and-forth, with UNH holding a slight lead in the quarter 7-5 to cut the deficit to 53-42.
  • Another three from Erdogan broke the scoring drought and spurred a 7-0 Husky run to finish the contest.
  • The Huskies out-rebounded the Wildcats 38-27, bouncing back after their previous matchup with BC. The Huskies' bench outscored the Wildcats' bench 24-12.
