ORONO, MAINE – The Northeastern women's basketball team (2-3) closed its weekend road trip by falling to Maine (2-2), 61-59, on Monday night at The Pit in Memorial Gymnasium.
The Huskies were led by sophomore guard
Gemima Motema, who led with 20Â points on 8-of-19 shooting. She also had six rebounds, and career-high six steals in the contest. She has finished in double-digits in all five of NU's contests this season.
Juniors
Derin Erdogan and
Deja Bristol also finished in double-figures for Northeastern. Erdogan tallied 15 points, while Bristol had career-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
- The contest was tight to start with five lead changes between the two squads in the opening six minutes.
- Graduate student forward JaMiya Braxton hit a pair of threes in the opening frame, one of which propelled NU to a 14-12 advantage.
- Maine closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 17-14. The Black Bears ended the first shooting 70% (7-of-10).
- Northeastern came out strong in the second, highlighted by an 8-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. Bristol tallied four of the points during that stretch.
- The Black Bears had a 6-0 run a few minutes later to go up 25-22, but the Huskies stayed within striking distance after layups from Motema and freshman forward Oralye Kiefer.
- Northeastern shot 50% (6-of-12) in the second, but Maine was able to take advantage of the offensive glass with seven second-chance points in the first half, helping them to a 28-26 lead at halftime. The lead changed a total of 11 times in the first half, with Maine leading for 12 minutes, and NU for six.
- Erdogan came out firing in the third, tallying an early three and layup to help the Huskies to a 33-30 lead.
- Both teams continued to trade baskets throughout the quarter. Free throws from Braxton and a layup from Motema gave Northeastern a 41-37 lead, but Maine continued to chip away at the deficit.
- The Black Bears closed the third on a 10-0 run, and pulled ahead 50-43.
- Motema got the Huskies off to a quick start in the fourth with four straight points to cut Maine's lead to 50-47.
- Two free throws by Maine put the Black Bears up 61-59 in the final minute of play, and they would ultimately seal the win.
- Northeastern tallied a season-high 16Â steals, and notched 26 points off Maine turnovers. Â
The Huskies head south to St. Petersburg, Florida for the St. Pete Showcase this Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26. On Friday the Huskies face UW-Green Bay at 2 pm, and on Saturday they face Portland at 2 pm. Both games will stream on FloHoops.
