ST PETERSBURG, FL. – Junior guard Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high nine points, but it was not enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team (2-5) fell to Portland (4-3), 67-41, on Saturday afternoon to close out the St. Pete Showcase Tournament.
- The first quarter saw four ties, as both teams traded buckets to kick off the contest.
- Junior forward Deja Bristol continued her strong play for the Huskies in the paint, tallying back-to-back baskets to knot the contest up at six.Â
- Portland scored four straight to take the lead for good at 12-8.
- The Pilots shot 57% (8-of-14) in the opening stanza to take a 17-14 lead into the second.Â
- The second quarter was all Portland, as the Pilots used a 12-0 run to extend their lead to 32-16 with five minutes to go until halftime.
- Portland shot 62.5% (10-of-16), outscoring the Huskies 21-7, and led 38-21 heading into the second half.
- Both teams traded points for most of the third. The Huskies went on a 5-0 run at the 6:31 mark, highlighted by a three-pointer from Erdogan to trim the deficit to 42-30.
- Portland continued to maintain its commanding double-digit lead though, leading 57-33 at the end of the quarter.
- Both teams went back and forth in the fourth, but the Pilots continued to maintain their lead. Erdogan tallied a layup to trim the deficit with 5:18 to go, but Portland held on for the win.
- The Huskies held the Pilots to 1-of-18 shooting from three in the contest.
- Portland tallied 22 points off turnovers, compared to 11 for Northeastern.
- The Pilots dominated in the paint, tallying 52 points compared to the Huskies 34.
The Huskies will face Merrimack on the road on Wednesday, November 30. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
