BOSTON— The 103rd season of Northeastern basketball commences on Monday night when the Huskies travel to crosstown rival Boston University on ESPN+ (7:30 p.m.) Northeastern is 51-51 all-time in season openers, including a 9-7 mark under
Bill Coen.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. YOUTH MOVEMENT: While many teams across the country look to the transfer portal to fill out their rosters, head coach
Bill Coen brought in six freshmen for the 2022-23. It's the most for the Huskies since the 2009-10 season. "We felt it was a better value to stick with the high school kids," Coen said. "The nature of college basketball now is that most of the high majors are recruiting out of the transfer portal. There were high school kids that were getting, in our estimation, overlooked and undervalued."
2. TELFORT AND DOHERTY COLLECT CAA PRESEASON HONORS: Junior
Jahmyl Telfort and redshirt senior
Chris Doherty collected preseason honors from the CAA at the conference's annual Media Day on Oct. 19. Telfort, the team's leading scorer from last season, was named to the CAA Preseason Second Team while Doherty, one of the nation's leading rebounders in 2021-22, earned Honorable Mention accolades.
3. ROAD WARRIORS: With just three home games during the non-conference season, the Huskies will be earning their frequent flyer miles in 2022 with trips to Boston University, Providence, Syracuse, London, Georgia Tech, UIC and Davidson, a total of 6527 miles.
