BOX SCORE (PDF)

BOSTON – Junior guard Derin Erdogan hit a pair of free throws with 1:33 left to reclaim the lead for good as the Northeastern women's basketball team (1-0) defeated cross-town rival Boston University (0-1), 66-65, to open the season on Monday.

Erdogan's free throws were the final points of the game as both teams used staunch defense down the stretch to keep each other off the board.

It was a stellar Husky debut for Erdogan, as she finished with a career-high 24 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. The junior transfer hit six of her final seven shot attempts, including three-of-four from beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Gemima Motema also had a strong performance with 16 points, going 4-4 from the free throw line and had three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

It was a tight contest that featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties.
  • The Huskies jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the contest, but that would be their largest lead of the game as BU answered with a 9-0 run to retake the lead.
  •  The teams would go back-and forth until Erdogan hit a jumper just inside the free throw line with eight seconds left in the first quarter to put NU up 17-16 after the first ten minutes.
  • The lead would again change hands multiple times until freshman guard Marian Turnbull hit a pair of free throws with 1:04 left in the half to give the Huskies a 33-31 lead.
  • That seemed poised to be the score at the half, but freshman forward Oralye Kiefer got an offense rebound and putback just before the buzzer to send Northeastern into the break, up 35-31.
  • The third quarter was more of the same as the lead would again change hands numerous times before the period ended tied at 48.
  • Motema hit a pair of free throws with 7:22 left to give NU a 57-56 lead, and then Erdogan would get a steal moments later and dish to Motema who would finish the fast break with a layup and push the lead to 59-56.
  • The Terriers responded with a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 63-59 with 4:33 left, but Erdogan would immediately hit a three to cut the deficit to one. She would then hit a jumper a minute later to retake the lead at 64-63.
  • After BU hit a layup to regain a 65-64 advantage, Erdogan drew a foul and sank the winning free throws.
  • The Terriers had one last chance in the dying seconds, but graduate student guard JaMiya Braxton stole the ball as time expired to secure the win.
  • The Huskies were lights out on offense in the fourth, shooting 6-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three, and hitting all four free throw attempts.
Northeastern will return to the court on Thursday, November 10 at #6 UConn. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm, and can be watched on SNY.
