BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team (3-6) used a 56.5% shooting percentage in the second half and
Chris Doherty scored eight of the team's final 12 points as the Huskies erased an 11-point deficit to down Holy Cross (3-8) on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena, 59-58.
Â
The Huskies, who hit five of their final six shots, were 24-of-53 on the day, including a 13-of-23 mark in the second half to keep the Crusaders in their sights before tying the game with 8:38 to go and taking the lead for good with 4:50 left in the game.
Â
Doherty, who missed the previous five games due to an injury, returned in a big way with 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 day from the floor along with nine rebounds to lead three Huskies in double-figures. He was joined by
Joe Pridgen (13 points on 6-of-13 shooting) for a Huskies' bench that contributed 36 points, and
Jahmyl Telfort (10 points, six rebounds).
Â
Gerrale Gates was the story for Holy Cross, finishing with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-18 with eight rebounds and five steals, while Nolan Dorsey (12 points) and Will Batchelder (10 points) also reached double figures for a Holy Cross squad that went 22-of-52 overall and 7-of-15 from long range.
Â
• Northeastern rebounded from a slow start to close the opening half on an 8-2 run to trim a Holy Cross lead that was once 11 down to five at the break, 31-26. NU was 11-of-30 overall and 4-of-14 from deep, led by seven points from Pridgen.
Â
• The Huskies had no answer for Gates early, who had 13 in the first half on 6-of-10 from the floor as the Crusaders went on a 20-4 run over a 10-minute span to take control. Holy Cross was 13-of-28 overall in the first half.
Â
• Northeastern wouldn't let Holy Cross get out of reach, keeping the deficit within seven points through the first 10 minutes of the second half before a bucket from Pridgen leveled the game at 45 with 8:38 to go.
Â
• The Huskies would lead by as many as five in the second half before a pair of three from Batchelder kept the Crusaders within striking distance late, but a three attempt from Joe Octave at the buzzer went begging to give the Huskies their second straight win.
Â
The Huskies will head back on the road next weekend when Northeastern travels to UIC for a 2 p.m. (ET) tip-off on Sunday afternoon.
