BOSTON – The Northeastern men's basketball team (8-20) held William & Mary (5-25, 4-13) to a 22% night from the floor (11-of-51) as the Huskies coasted to a 62-28 victory on Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
Â
The defensive performance marked the first time the Huskies have held an opponent under 30 points since Jan. 12, 1963 against Hartford.
Â
"Defensively, we set the tone from the start," said head coach
Bill Coen. "We played physically, protected the paint and did a really good job on the defensive glass. Offensively, we shared the ball at an elite level. We had 17 assists on 25 baskets, and when you have those kinds of numbers you know you're playing unselfishly."
Chris Doherty recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds, the most since Scott Eatherton during the 2013-14 campaign. Doherty is now seven rebounds away from cracking the top-ten of Northeastern's single-season rebounding list.
Â
Jahmyl Telfort, meanwhile, finished the day with six assists, the most for any Husky in a game this season, to go along with 11 points as one of three Huskies in double figures (
Jason Strong, 13 points).
Shaquille Walters added nine points and nine boards.
Â
NU was 25-of-56 overall on the night, 9-of-33 from deep and recorded 17 assists, tying a season-high. Northeastern also tied a season-low with nine turnovers.
Â
• Northeastern came out launching in the first half, going 13-of-30 overall and 5-of-20 from deep, but held William & Mary to a 28% showing (7-of-25) to take a commanding lead at the break, 33-15.
Â
• Doherty did the job down low, finishing the opening half with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting along with nine rebounds, while Strong led the way with 10 points off the bench. Telfort, meanwhile, dished out six assists.
Â
• Northeastern went up big thanks to a 16-2 run over five minutes, with five players finding the scoresheet in that span to put the hosts up 14 before finishing the half up by 18.
Â
• The lid stayed on the bucket for the Tribe into the second half, going just 4-of-26 from the floor to allow Northeastern to empty the bench and remain in control throughout the remainder of regulation
Â
The Huskies will return home for the final time this season on Saturday afternoon when Northeastern hosts Elon on Senior Day at Matthews Arena. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and will be televised nationally on CBSSN.
