BOSTON – Paced by a team-high 22 points from senior guard
Kendall Currence, the Northeastern women's basketball team (13-12, 7-8 CAA) picked up a win in its annual "Think Pink" game with a 65-52 victory over JMU (12-14, 8-7 CAA) on Friday at the Cabot Center.
The win for the Huskies snapped a five-game losing streak and also marked the team's first victory vs. JMU at home since 2012.
Along with Currence, seven Huskies filled up the stat sheet, which included nine points apiece from freshman guard
Claudia Soriano and freshman guard
Gemima Motema.
- Northeastern stormed out to a quick 7-0 advantage, highlighted by five points from Currence. The Huskies continued to remain in control shooting 50% (8-of-16) in the first, and took a 18-10 lead into the second.
- The Huskies continued their success on offense in the second, shooting 53.8% (7-of-13). A 5-0 run for the hosts extended the lead to 28-16 at the 4:03 mark.
- A late three by senior guard Katie May and free throw by junior guard Century McCartney kept the Huskies up by double-digits, and leading 36-25 at halftime.
- Northeastern only shot 26.7% (4-of-15) in the third, which led to a JMU comeback. The Huskies remained up in double-digits until the last five minutes of the quarter. The Dukes went on a 6-0 run to trim the deficit to 39-31, but free throws by Currence pushed the lead back up to 10 right away.
- JMU continued to chip away, but Northeastern continued to remain ahead, and took a 49-43 lead into the fourth.
- The Dukes started the final quarter on a 5-0 run, and cut the hosts' advantage to 49-48 at the 6:20 mark.
- A jumper by graduate student forward Emily Calabrese and a layup by Soriano pushed the lead back up to five (53-48), and JMU didn't get any closer the rest of the way.
- Northeastern outscored the Dukes 12-4 for the remainder of the game to seal the win.
- The Huskies tallied 26 points in the paint compared to eight for JMU.
- Calabrese led Northeastern on the boards, grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds.
- May had eight points and six rebounds.
- Soriano also had four steals, three assists and four rebounds.
