BOX SCORE (PDF)

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Northeastern baseball team (8-7-1) notched its first home win of the season defeating the Bryant Bulldogs (3-9) in a defensive battle, 1-0 at Friedman Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
  • The Huskies' defense was flashy early, getting a 3-6-3 double play to end the top of the first inning.
  • Northeastern followed that up with back to back two-out singles in the bottom of the inning from Mike Sirota and Corey DiLoreto, but the Huskies were unable to hit them home.
  • After several innings with no hits or one hit for either side, the bats got going for the Huskies in the bottom of the sixth. Back to back singles from Max Viera and Sirota gave the Huskies two early base-runners with one out. The following at-bat saw DiLoreto hit a single to center, scoring Viera from second to give the Huskies their lone run of the game.
  • Bryant was ready to respond in the top of the seventh getting two quick runners via single and hit-by-pitch. Jordy Allard entered the game with no outs and struck out three straight batters swinging to get Northeastern out of the jam.
  • Allard would go on to strike out five of the six batters he faced, going 2.0 innings with no hits, runs, or walks.
  • Spenser Smith hit his second triple of the season in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score.
  • Thomas Balboni notched his second save in as many games as he entered the game in the top of the ninth; he struck out the lead-off hitter, but walked the second batter. He then got a grounder to the first baseman Justin Bosland and ran to cover the bag as Bosland threw to second. Spenser Smith then returned the ball to Balboni covering first to complete the 3-6-1 double play to end the game.
  • Eric Yost (1-0) was NU's starter and went 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on just five hits and one walk. He retired three by strikeout.
  • The Huskies are now 3-2 in games they don't commit an error, and 5-2-1 in the month of March.
The Huskies kick off a short home-stand, as they will take on Merrimack on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman. First pitch is at 3pm on FloBaseball.
