KINGSTON, R.I. – The Northeastern baseball team (13-11-1, 0-3) snapped a four-game losing skid with a road win over Rhode Island (3-20, 0-0), defeating the Rams by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
- The game was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings of play, with both teams showcasing their bullpen talent – a total of 10 pitchers saw action between the two teams to open the game.
- The Huskies broke through in the top of the sixth, with a leadoff double by Luke Beckstein – the next batter, Danny Crossen, hit a ball towards short stop but a throwing error allowed him to reach base and allowed Beckstein to score from second.
- After a two-out triple by Justin Bosland, a JP Olson single up the middle sent Bosland home for the 2-0 lead.
- After Olson stole second, designated hitter Buddy Mrowka then singled to right-center, scoring Olson for the 3-0 lead.
- The Huskies would tack on another run in the top of the seventh – Spenser Smith reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and took second after a failed pickoff attempt. Smith ran to third on a dropped strike three, and then took home on a passed ball to the next batter.
- The Rams would attempt to rally in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on two bases-loaded situations, cutting the lead to one run at 4-3.
- Thomas Balboni entered the game in the ninth inning and notched his fourth save of the season, getting all three outs in the final frame by way of strikeout. He took over from Jordy Allard, who also notched three strikeouts in his outing (1.1 IP).
- The NU pitching staff of Eric Yost (2.0 IP, 1K), Jake Gigliotti (2.0, 1K), Michael Gemma (0.1, 1K), and Owen Langan (1.2, 2H, 2K) opened the first five innings for NU. Langan was credited with the win in relief - his first career win.
The Huskies will start off the home CAA schedule with a three game series with William & Mary. The two teams play Friday at 2pm, and Saturday & Sunday at 1pm at Friedman Diamond. Friday's game will be broadcast on NESN+, and all three will stream on FloBaseball.
