CHARLESTON, S.C.- Freshman guard
Gemima Motema notched a team-high 20 points, but it was not enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team (14-14, 8-10 CAA) fell to the College of Charleston (17-12, 9-9 CAA) by a score of 73-64 on Saturday afternoon at TD Arena.
- The Huskies got off to a quick 4-0 lead after layups from Motema and graduate student forward Emily Calabrese.
- The teams traded buckets for most of the first, with Northeastern going in front, but Charleston continued to respond back.
- A layup by freshman guard Claudia Soriano put the Huskies up 10-8 at the five-minute mark, but a three pointer put Cougars up 16-14 a few minutes later, and the hosts took a slim 18-14 lead going into the second.
- Back and forth play continued, as neither team led by no more than five points.
- A layup by Calabrese and free throw by Motema put the Huskies back in front 24-23 at the 5:05 mark.
- Neither team scored again up until the two-minute mark, when the hosts pulled back ahead 25-24 after free throws.
- Charleston continued to maintain a slim one-point edge, and led 27-26 at halftime.
- The hosts stormed out to a 7-2 run to start the third, and extended the lead to 32-28 at the 7:39 mark.
- A jumper by Calabrese trimmed the 36-32 a few minutes later, but a free throw by the hosts put Charleston back up by five.
- The Cougars ballooned their lead to 46-32 at the 4:31 mark after a 10-0 run, and took a 50-44 edge going into the fourth.
- A jumper by Motema trimmed the Cougars lead to 52-46 at the 8:35 mark, but five straight points by the hosts increased the advantage back up to double-digits at 57-46.
- Free throws in the final few minutes for the Huskies trimmed Charleston lead back to single digits, but the Cougars continued to remain in front to ultimately hold on for the win.
- The Huskies struggled offensively in the contest, shooting 42.3% (22-of-52), and 1-18 from three.
- Calabrese (17 points), and Soriano (13 points), notched double-digits.
- Charleston notched 18 points off turnovers.
The Huskies will be the #6 seed in the CAA Tournament, and take on #3 Towson on Friday, March 11 at 7:30 pm.
