HIGH POINT, N.C. – In game two of the weekend set, Northeastern University (19-19-1) took down High Point University (13-27) by a score of 11-1 on Saturday night at Williard Stadium.
Â
After an early lead for the Huskies, a huge seventh inning put the game out of reach for the Panthers as Northeastern evened the weekend series at 1-1. Despite allowing eight total runs, the Northeastern defense held High Point to just one run on the night, committing no errors in the field.
Â
- The NU defense shined early in the contest - JP Olson picked off a runner at second trying to steal, and a deep ball hit to the left field wall almost scored a High Point runner, but a good collection and throw by Luke Masiuk and an excellent cutoff from Spenser Smith got the ball home in time as Olson prevented the run from scoring at the plate.
- For the second time in the series, the Huskies got on the board first with a two-run second inning: JP Olson drew a leadoff walk and Danny Crossen advanced him to second on a ground out to start the action.
- After a walk to Justin Bosland, Jack Doyle hit an RBI single through the right side that allowed Olson to score from second. They very next batter was Luke Masiuk, who singled to center field, scoring Bosland from third to lead 2-0.
- Both pitchers settled in through the middle innings allowing hits but stranding runners – Wyatt Scotti (W, 7-2) worked 6.0 innings for the Huskies as the starter allowing six hits, but no walks or runs, while striking out four.
- Northeastern tallied a solo run in the top of the sixth – Spenser Smith singled to center field and then reached second on a fielding error. He was scored by an RBI single up the middle by Luke Beckstein to make it 3-0.
- The Huskies had an explosion of offense in the seventh tallying five runs to extend the lead to 8-0: with the bases loaded due to a walk to Olson, a Msiuk single, and a Costello walk, Spenser Smith hit a blooper to right field scoring Olson from third, and Max Viera hit a bases-clearing three-RBI double. Viera would score on an RBI single by the next batter, Luke Beckstein.
- The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to make it 8-1.
- Max Viera added to his RBI total with a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to pile on the insurance, 11-1. He scored Smith and Costello, who both reached on walks.
- Jordy Allard took over in the seventh inning and worked 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit, but retired the last six batters he faced, four by strikeout.
- Thomas Balboni closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth and allowed just one hit in the final frame, striking out the final batter.
- The game was Northeastern's first win in a night game the this season (three games played).
- NU is 5-0 when reaching the 10-run mark this season – it's the second game this calendar month that the Huskies have notched 10 runs.
