BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern baseball team (14-13-1, 1-5 CAA) pulled out its first conference victory of the season, defeating William & Mary (13-12, 4-2 CAA) by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Solid pitching from the Huskies and a big fourth inning were the difference in the final game of the weekend for Northeastern, allowing just four William & Mary hits, and only the two runs.
- Both pitchers were dueling to start with just two hits over the first three and a half innings.
- The Huskies struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning – a leadoff single by Mike Sirota and a double by Danny Crossen put two runners in scoring position.
- A deep single by Corey DiLoreto pushed Crossen to third, scoring Sirota – the following batter, Justin Bosland, laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance DiLoreto to second.
- Max Viera broke the game open with a big double to right-center field, scoring Crossen and DiLoreto for the 3-0 lead.
- In the top of the fifth, the Tribe would tally two runs on a home run. The Tribe cut the lead to just one run for NU, but the Huskies' defense held strong to prevent the Tribe from tying in the final four frames.
- Wyatt Scotti (6-1) finished the day with 8.0 innings pitched, allowing just four hits, two earned runs, and no walks. He struck out seven on the afternoon.
- Thomas Balboni notched his fifth save of the season taking over in the top of the ninth. After allowing two base runners with one out, Balboni forced a ground out to short stop Spenser Smith, who threw to JP Olson at home plate to tag out the potential tying runner.
- Balboni followed that at-bat with a four pitch strikeout to end the game.
- Northeastern is now 3-2 in one-run games this season.
The Huskies will stay in New England for the week with a mid-week matchup with Boston College this Tuesday in the 2022 Baseball Beanpot. First pitch for that game is slated for 4pm at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton.
