BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern baseball team (15-14-1, 2-5 CAA) took down CAA foe Elon (14-15, 2-5 CAA) by a score of 7-3 on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
After taking the lead in the first, but falling behind 3-1 in the third inning, the Huskies' offense responded quickly to retake the lead for good and added late insurance to take the conference victory.
Â
- The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning - leadoff hitter Mike Sirota took the first pitch he saw and belted it down the left field line for a double, and back to back walks from Luke Beckstein and Max Viera had three quick runners on for NU.
- Corey DiLoreto grounded into a double pay that scored Sirota from third to give the Huskies the opening score of the game, 1-0.
- Elon answered back in the top of the third with a three-run homer to left field to lead, 3-1.
- The Huskies wouldn't be down for long as they tallied a three run bottom of the third to retake the lead.
- The inning was kicked off by Spenser Smith hitting a leadoff single to right field.
- After Sirota reached base after being hit by a pitch, Beckstein hit an RBI single to the gap in right-center, scoring Smith – the next batter, Viera, hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Sirota from third.
- Danny Crossen hit the next pitch to the shortstop who got the lead runner at second base but overthrew first base on the double play attempt, allowing Beckstein to run home for the go-ahead run, 4-3
- The Husky defense then went to work defending it's one-run lead, allowing just two hits by the Phoenix the rest of the game.
- Starting pitcher Sebastian Keane (3-2) worked into the seventh inning allowing just the five hits, the three earned runs on the home run, while walking one and striking out one.
- Eric Yost took over in the eighth inning, and earned his first save of the season after entering the game with a one-run lead, going 2.0 IP with no hits, no runs, no walks, and one strikeout. It's his fifth career save.
- The Huskies added their insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning - after Crossen reached on a fielding error and Justin Bosland notched a single, Spenser Smith hammered a three-run home run over the right field wall to extend NU's lead to four runs at 7-3.
- It's Northeastern's first Friday win since the Holy Cross double-header back in March at Friedman, in which the Huskies swept the Crusaders 3-1 and 10-0.
The two teams are slated to finish up this series with games Saturday and Sunday at Friedman Diamond. Both are slated for a 1pm start on FloBaseball.
